Proceedings in the case involving former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were on Tuesday adjourned after he was not produced in court, with his legal team citing ill health and ongoing treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

In an update issued to the public by former Kampala deputy lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura, it was confirmed that Lukwago remains under medical care, with access to him limited to his spouse and fellow lawyer Medard Ssegona.

"Counsel Erias Lukwago has not been produced in court. He is still unwell and receiving treatment at Mulago Referral Hospital, where only his spouse and counsel Ssegonna are allowed to access him. Case adjourned to Tuesday next week."

The court subsequently pushed the hearing to next week, raising fresh concerns over his condition and the circumstances of his detention.

The Uganda Law Society and other rights groups have previously criticised the manner in which Lukwago was apprehended, arguing that it undermines legal protections and due process.

Lukwago, a senior lawyer and prominent opposition figure, was arrested earlier this month by security forces in an operation that drew widespread criticism from legal and political actors.

His arrest came at a time when he was actively involved in the defence of opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who is facing treason-related charges.

Following his arrest, Lukwago was charged before a civilian court with misprision of treason, an offence that alleges knowledge of treasonous activity without reporting it to authorities.

He denied the charges and was remanded as investigations and court proceedings continued.

However, reports of his deteriorating health while in custody have since dominated the case, with claims that he was subjected to harsh conditions prior to his hospitalisation.

His absence in court on medical grounds has now added another layer of complexity to an already contentious case.
