Lawyer and governance activist Sarah Bireete has ignited fresh debate after drawing a biblical comparison between the story of Delilah and the country’s politics.
In a post shared on X, Bireete reflected on the tale of Delilah from the Book of Judges, describing her as the woman who ultimately betrayed Samson by disclosing the secret of his strength to the Philistines. The betrayal led to Samson’s downfall, imprisonment, and eventual death.
“For some reason, I have been thinking of Delilah today; yes, biblical Delilah—in relation to Uganda’s politics. Who could it be? Who is Uganda’s Delilah?” Bireete wrote, leaving the question open-ended.
Her remarks quickly drew attention, with observers interpreting the analogy as a subtle commentary on issues of trust, loyalty, and betrayal within Uganda’s political space.
Some linked the imagery to the ongoing struggles among opposition parties, while others saw it as a broader reflection on leaders who compromise national interests for personal or external gain.
The biblical Delilah is often remembered as a symbol of manipulation and misplaced trust, themes that continue to resonate in modern political discussions.
By invoking her story, Bireete appears to be urging Ugandans to reflect on who, within the political arena, plays a similar role in undermining collective strength.
