Reports emerging from Uganda indicate that Ashraf Serembe, widely known as Commander Ashraf and a longtime bodyguard within the National Unity Platform (NUP) political movement, is currently bedridden and fighting for his life following a severe intestinal infection.
Sources familiar with his condition say Serembe was admitted to hospital a few days ago after experiencing serious complications.
Medical personnel have reportedly diagnosed a life-threatening infection affecting his intestines, with doctors recommending an urgent surgical procedure to stabilise his condition and prevent further deterioration.

He is said to be appealing for financial and moral support from colleagues and comrades within the opposition political circles as he prepares for the emergency operation.
Serembe, also identified in some circles as Ashraf Bagenda Mulongosa, has long been associated with the inner security team of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine).

His role during the politically tense 2021 presidential campaigns placed him in the spotlight, particularly among opposition supporters who describe him as one of the figures who stood at the frontline during confrontations with state security forces.
He is notably remembered for an incident in which he is said to have confronted armed Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel during attempts to forcefully access or apprehend Bobi Wine while on the campaign trail.
Supporters of the opposition have since framed the moment as one of resistance and protection during a period marked by heightened political tension and security operations.

While Serembe has not held any formal political office within NUP, he has been regarded as part of the trusted protection detail surrounding the party’s leadership, a role that often placed him in high-risk situations during rallies and campaign events.
Details of his current medical condition remain limited, and there has been no official statement from NUP leadership regarding his hospitalization.
However, messages circulating among supporters describe him as critically ill and in need of urgent intervention.
