The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has thrown its weight behind Defence Minister Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament, aligning itself with recent remarks by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In a statement issued on Friday, Igara East MP and PLU Director of Mobilization Michael Mawanda welcomed Muhoozi’s endorsement, signaling what appears to be growing political momentum behind Oboth-Oboth’s potential bid for the powerful parliamentary position.

“The PLU Mobilization Team warmly welcomes your endorsement of Hon. Oboth Oboth for the position of Speaker of the 12th Parliament,” Mawanda said.

He further claimed that PLU legislators would vote as a bloc in support of the Defence Minister, suggesting a coordinated political strategy ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“All PLU Members of Parliament (over 300) will unanimously vote for Hon. Oboth Oboth,” he stated.

Mawanda also praised Gen. Muhoozi’s leadership, framing the endorsement as part of broader internal alignment within the political formation.

“We sincerely thank you for your wise leadership and continued guidance, Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba,” he added.

The statement comes a day after Gen. Muhoozi publicly endorsed Oboth-Oboth, describing him as “the best Minister in our government for the past 5 years” and declaring his support for him to become Speaker in the next Parliament.

The CDF also made controversial remarks suggesting that a decision on the next Speaker had already been made and warning that dissent could attract consequences.

Oboth-Oboth, a trained lawyer and current Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, has served as Member of Parliament for West Budama County South since 2011.

He previously chaired the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, positioning him as an experienced figure within Uganda’s legislative and executive structures.

The developments come in the wake of a high-level meeting between President Yoweri Museveni and current Speaker Anita Among at State House on Thursday, further fueling speculation over succession planning within Parliament.
