The arrest of Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere has triggered fresh political tension in Uganda, with analysts pointing to deeper power struggles within the country’s parliamentary leadership.

“The arrest of Justine Nameere is more than a single headline—it signals deeper political shifts within Uganda’s parliamentary power structure.”

Nameere was reportedly picked up by armed operatives on Friday evening, May 15, shortly after being sworn in for a new term.

The arrest, said to have occurred along Circular Road in Masaka, has raised questions over both its timing and intent, with security agencies yet to provide a clear account of the operation.

“The timing of the arrest, immediately after swearing-in, raises questions about whether this was a coincidence or a calculated political move.”

Political analyst David Soita Masinde has framed the incident as more than a routine security action, arguing that it reflects a calculated move within ongoing speakership contestations.

According to Masinde, Nameere’s removal from the political scene could significantly affect the internal dynamics surrounding Speaker Anita Among.

“Nameere was not just an ally; she played a central role in mobilising support and sustaining the Speaker’s influence on the floor of Parliament.”

He describes Nameere as a key mobiliser within the Speaker’s camp, noting that her role extended beyond political loyalty to strategic coordination.

In his assessment, sidelining her weakens the Speaker’s ability to consolidate numbers and maintain influence in parliamentary proceedings.

“Her sudden removal weakens the Speaker’s ability to command loyalty and manage crucial legislative numbers at a critical moment.”

Masinde further suggests that the manner of the arrest—reportedly involving plain-clothed operatives and an undisclosed detention location—was designed to send a strong message.

“The use of plain-clothed operatives and an undisclosed detention location sends a message that extends beyond one individual.”

He argues that such a move could have a chilling effect on allies within the Speaker’s circle, potentially discouraging open support at a time of heightened political pressure.

“Such actions risk intimidating key political actors and could accelerate fractures within the Speaker’s inner circle.”

The development comes amid growing scrutiny of the Speaker’s position, with internal divisions and external political interests increasingly shaping the parliamentary landscape.

Police authorities have indicated they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest, stating that they were not formally aware of the operation at the time it occurred.

Meanwhile, Nameere’s family has raised concerns over her whereabouts and safety, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident.

“This development tests how far state institutions are willing to go when political contests at the highest levels intensify.”

Masinde argues that the broader implication lies in how state institutions respond to such politically sensitive developments.

“The bigger question now is not just about survival of leadership, but whether the system allows stability without sustained political pressure.”
