Concerns over the reported illness of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among have triggered wider political reflection in Uganda, with analysts linking the development to her time in office and leadership style.

Reports circulating in Ugandan media this week suggested that Among is unwell and may be suffering from complications associated with blood clots, with claims that she has sought permission to access medical care.

Political analyst Alfonse Mukasa has weighed in on the matter, arguing that the situation should be viewed through a broader lens of leadership conduct and public service.

“My advice to all politicians is simple: serve people and behave well. The world no longer sympathises with Anita Among due to wrongs she committed. You lose nothing by serving all people equally,” Mukasa said.

He added that public office bearers must prioritise fairness and accountability, noting that leaders who treat citizens equally tend to retain public goodwill even after leaving office.

Mukasa contrasted Among’s situation with other public figures currently engaged in government outreach, including political promoters recently engaged by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja alongside several senior officials.

He said such leaders have demonstrated that it is possible to serve across political and social divides while maintaining public trust.

He further argued that Among’s current challenges reflect a pattern of political choices made during her tenure as Speaker, suggesting that leaders “eventually face the consequences of how they treated people while in office.”

“If she used her position wrongly, then now she is reaping what she sowed,” Mukasa added, while urging leaders to embrace inclusivity in public service.

The remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing that leadership accountability shapes public perception long after office, while others caution against linking health issues to political criticism.
