Journalist Andrew Natumanya, popularly known as Ninye Tabz, has publicly expressed gratitude to supporters, fellow activists, and political allies after his release on police bond following several days of uncertainty over his whereabouts.
Tabz, who had been reported missing for days before resurfacing under police custody, used social media to thank Ugandans who rallied behind him during the period of detention, describing the experience as difficult but encouraging due to public support.
In a social media post, he said:
“THANK YOU UGANDA FOR STANDING WITH ME! Five days of hell but you still stood for the truth, for freedom, for justice and for a better country!”
He further acknowledged support from National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and others who he said played a role in advocating for his release.
“Thank you my President Bobi Wine and everyone that put together every piece of effort and prayer to realize my freedom! Thank you!”
Tabz was released on police bond after being held in connection with allegations linked to the alleged disclosure of official information and personal data.
Authorities are reported to be continuing with investigations, with the journalist expected to report back to investigators later this month as inquiries proceed.
His disappearance had sparked concern among sections of civil society and media stakeholders, who questioned the circumstances under which he was picked up and held without immediate public disclosure of his whereabouts.
The incident added to ongoing debates in Uganda about the treatment of journalists and government critics by security agencies.
