Ugandan International Criminal Court (ICC) Judge Solomy Balungi Bossa has joined a landmark legal challenge against the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, arguing that sanctions imposed on her and two fellow ICC judges unlawfully interfere with judicial independence and the administration of international justice.

Judge Bossa, alongside Canadian judge Kimberly Prost and Beninese judge Reine Alapini-Gansou, has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in New York seeking to overturn sanctions imposed under Executive Order 14203. The order was issued in response to ICC investigations involving alleged war crimes in Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories.

The three judges argue that they have been sanctioned solely because of judicial decisions made in the course of performing their official duties. "The sanctions are unlawful and represent a serious threat to judicial independence," the judges argue in their legal filing, maintaining that judges should never be punished for carrying out their constitutional and professional responsibilities.
