National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has accused electoral officials and security forces of manipulating results in the Kampala Central parliamentary race, where he was a candidate.
Speaking on X, Rubongoya claimed that while he held a “very comfortable lead” by Wednesday evening, polling stations were targeted by violent gangs and subjected to irregularities.
“In Kisenyi 1, violent gangs took over polling stations and were ticking NRM with reckless abandon, as many times as they wanted,” he wrote, alleging widespread intimidation of NUP agents.
Rubongoya further condemned the Returning Officer for announcing thousands of votes in favor of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Minsa Kabanda, from strategically located polling stations near State House and Summit View, which he described as areas dominated by military personnel.
He asserted that these actions undermined the clear support he received in 17 out of 20 parishes.
“Our polling agents were beaten up and chased from most polling stations. Our protestations were ignored by the Police and Electoral Commission,” Rubongoya added, reiterating claims of systematic disenfranchisement.
Despite the alleged interference, Rubongoya thanked Kampala Central residents for their support.
“I remain very grateful to the people of Kampala Central for the overwhelming support, despite the regime’s move to usurp their voice,” he stated, describing the purported irregularities as part of a broader national pattern.
The NUP official concluded with a defiant message: “UGANDA WILL BE FREE,” signaling his continued commitment to challenging the current administration’s control.
These claims come amid ongoing scrutiny of Uganda’s electoral processes, with opposition parties raising concerns over transparency, voter intimidation, and the role of security forces in recent polls.
