Media personality DJ Kalz has narrated how he was once denied a teaching job despite meeting the academic requirements, saying the experience left him questioning how hiring decisions are made in some schools.
He said the incident happened shortly after he completed his teaching course, when he visited a secondary school in Zzana after being informed that a Chemistry teacher for Senior Five and Six was needed.
“When I just completed my Teaching Course, I went to a certain school in Zzana to ask for a job to teach Chemistry S5/S6, after being told that they needed one. Bro, after checking my documents,” he recalled.
According to him, things took a different turn after the headteacher reviewed his papers.
“The Headteacher told me, ‘Sir, we are sorry, you are over qualified for this job and on top of that you look young for our girls here.’”
DJ Kalz says what surprised him most was not only the rejection, but the reasoning behind it. He noted that there was no discussion on salary expectations or working conditions.
“That wouldn’t have pained me, but guy never even asked me how much I could work for,” he added.
He says the matter resurfaced years later when he unexpectedly met the same headteacher in a casual setting.
“On Friday, I met the headteacher in one of my kafundas, he was live as if I know you, and I reminded him that I am the teacher you refused to give a job at ……… High School. And just like that I bought him beer.”
