Balaam Ateenyi has called on security agencies to take action against bloggers accused of exposing a minor linked to the ongoing investigation into the death of an 18-year-old in Matuga.

In a statement addressed to Uganda Police Force and other security agencies, the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs expressed concern over what he described as the irresponsible public handling of the case.

He said a young girl reportedly connected to the incident had been interviewed on YouTube without efforts to conceal her identity.

The minister said revealing the girl’s face and voice during an active investigation was unethical and posed significant risks.

According to him, such exposure could subject the minor to retaliation, public backlash, and emotional distress.

“Minors deserve protection, privacy, and psychological support — not public exposure for views and engagement,” he stated.

The Matuga incident, which has drawn widespread public attention on social media, remains under investigation. Police have confirmed that a suspect is in custody and awaiting court proceedings.

However, online coverage of the case has sparked debate about the role of digital content creators in reporting sensitive criminal matters.

Ateenyi urged bloggers and online platforms to exercise restraint and adhere to ethical standards when covering cases involving children.

He emphasized that safeguarding the rights and welfare of minors must take precedence over online traffic and engagement.

The minister also appealed to police to expedite investigations and ensure that the suspect is arraigned in court in accordance with the law.

Child rights advocates have repeatedly warned against the exposure of minors in criminal cases, citing potential long-term psychological and social consequences.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding action against the bloggers mentioned.
