President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Ethiopian aviation veteran Girma Wake as the new Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, a move that has triggered debate within political and aviation circles about the future direction of the national carrier.
The appointment was disclosed by State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Ateenyi, who said the decision effectively ends the tenure of outgoing CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki.
Ateenyi described the change as decisive, arguing that the airline requires experienced leadership to address persistent operational and financial challenges.
Mr Wake is widely recognised across the continent for his role in transforming Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s most successful carrier.
He served as CEO of the airline between 2004 and 2011, overseeing rapid expansion, fleet modernisation, and the strengthening of Addis Ababa as a major global aviation hub.
According to Ateenyi, President Museveni hosted Mr Wake at State House on Tuesday evening ahead of his assumption of office.
During the meeting, the President reportedly told the incoming CEO that Uganda Airlines faced serious problems and required firm, professional intervention to stabilise and reposition the airline.
Supporters of the appointment have hailed it as a pragmatic and Pan-African decision that prioritises competence over nationality.
Ateenyi credited Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba with identifying and recommending Mr Wake, describing the move as a demonstration of confidence in African expertise to solve African challenges.
Uganda Airlines has struggled in recent years with route suspensions, high operating costs, and questions around management efficiency, despite significant government investment.
However, the decision has also raised questions about leadership transitions within state-owned enterprises and the fate of local professionals previously entrusted with key roles.
The government has yet to issue an official statement detailing the terms of Mr Wake’s appointment or outlining immediate reforms expected at the airline.
Mr Wake is expected to assume office in the coming days as pressure mounts for tangible improvements at Uganda’s national carrier.
