Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has strongly condemned the postponement of a planned prayer mass for detained opposition figure Kizza Besigye, describing the move as a troubling assault on civil liberties and freedom of worship.
The mass, which had been scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Lubaga Cathedral, was intended to pray for Dr. Besigye and other political prisoners.
According to Lukwago, the service was called off following a directive allegedly issued by President Yoweri Museveni to Paul Ssemogerere.
In a strongly worded statement, Lukwago termed the decision “callous” and “abhorrable,” arguing that it undermines religious freedom and basic human rights.
He said the cancellation should provoke indignation among Ugandans and the international community, warning that such actions signal shrinking democratic space in the country.
However, the planned mass had drawn attention from opposition supporters and civil society groups who view Besigye’s detention as politically motivated.
Dr. Besigye, a long-time government critic and four-time presidential contender, has repeatedly clashed with authorities over political reforms and governance issues.
His supporters say the prayer gathering was meant to show solidarity and call for justice.
Lukwago urged citizens to intensify efforts to defend civil liberties and uphold the rule of law, insisting that freedom of worship and political expression must be protected.
