Opposition leader and National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Bobi Wine, has raised alarm over the reported abduction of a journalist and a raid on a media proprietor, describing the actions as a violation of press freedom.
In a statement, Bobi Wine said Arnold Mukose, a journalist with Alternative Digitalk, was reportedly abducted two days ago shortly after concluding a talk show.
The whereabouts of Mukose remain unknown, and authorities have yet to provide any explanation for his detention.
Wine also revealed that yesterday, the military allegedly attempted to abduct Norman Tumuhimbise, proprietor of Digitalk, when they raided his home.
“The persecution of citizens because of their opinions MUST STOP!” Bobi Wine declared, urging the authorities to either release Mukose immediately or ensure he is charged and brought to court if any crime has been committed.
The opposition leader described the incidents as part of a growing pattern of harassment targeting journalists and media houses in Uganda, warning that silencing the press undermines democratic principles and citizens’ rights.
Media advocacy groups have condemned the abductions, calling for transparency and respect for the freedom of expression enshrined in the Ugandan constitution.
The government has not issued an official statement regarding Mukose’s disappearance or the attempted raid on Tumuhimbise.
This latest development has intensified concerns about the safety of journalists in Uganda, highlighting the risks faced by media practitioners who cover political matters and hold public officials accountable.
