A 28-year-old journalist was seriously injured on Wednesday morning after a motor vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure and knocked him down at Ggaba Trading Centre in Kampala, Uganda Police Force has confirmed.

According to police at Kabalagala, the incident occurred on 15 April 2026 at around 9:00am along the stretch between Maranatha Primary School and Maranatha High School.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace, commonly referred to as a “Drone,” registered as UU 00067 T.

Authorities say the vehicle was transporting a suspect identified as Okello to a Mobile Court when it developed mechanical failure moments before reaching the court premises.

Police report indicates that the driver lost control after the brakes allegedly failed, causing the vehicle to veer off and knock down pedestrian Mulwana Ronald.

The victim, identified as a 28-year-old male journalist, sustained serious injuries in the incident. Emergency responders rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Police have not yet disclosed the extent of his injuries but confirmed that he is under close observation by medical personnel. The condition of the suspect being transported, Okello, has also not been detailed in the preliminary report.

Kabalagala Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including a technical inspection of the vehicle to establish whether the brake failure was mechanical or due to negligence.

Authorities are also expected to record statements from the driver, passengers, and witnesses who were present at the busy trading centre during the morning rush hour.
