Outgoing Leader of Opposition and Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi has officially handed over office equipment, vehicles, security detail, and keys linked to the Leader of Opposition office following his swearing-in to the 12th Parliament.

Ssenyonyi confirmed that the handover was done immediately after taking oath as Member of Parliament, marking the formal end of his tenure in the 11th Parliament.

“After swearing in as MP of the 12th Parliament, I handed over the official vehicles, security detail, and office keys of the Leader of the Opposition to the Director-LOP’s Office to forward the same to the Clerk’s Office. This marks the end of my tenure as Leader of the Opposition of the 11th Parliament,” he said.

The process involved transferring all official assets attached to the Leader of the Opposition’s office to the relevant parliamentary administrative offices for further processing and reallocation.

His action has drawn public attention, with activist Gideon Nova Kwikiriza praising the orderly transition and describing Ssenyonyi as a leader who has set an example in public service conduct.

“You'll never get this gentleman Joel Ssenyonyi off guard. He's perfectly doing what he's supposed to do as the leader of the alternative government. Immediately after swearing in, he handed over office and all that comes with it,” Kwikiriza said.

He added that the move reflects the standard expected of public officials during transitions, noting that it was an example of accountability that should be embraced across leadership positions.

“This is what everyone else should have done but they can't. Thank you Joel for walking the talk and showing Uganda what true leadership is even at a young age. You have challenged so many and you continue to do so,” he added.

The handover marks the conclusion of Ssenyonyi’s administrative role as Leader of the Opposition in the 11th Parliament. He remains the elected MP for Nakawa West in the 12th Parliament, where he is expected to continue participating in legislative duties.

The transition follows parliamentary procedures that require outgoing office holders to surrender government property and administrative control upon exit.

The process is part of broader efforts to maintain order and accountability in the management of public offices.

Ssenyonyi’s exit from the LOP office now clears the way for new leadership arrangements in the opposition structure within the 12th Parliament.
