Byanyima, who heads UNAIDS and is the wife of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, expressed deep concern over Lukwago's treatment following his arrest by security operatives earlier this week.
In a statement shared on social media, Byanyima described the developments surrounding Lukwago as troubling and warned that they raise serious questions about the state of the rule of law in Uganda.GET FULL STORY HERE.
She argued that the incident goes beyond the fate of one individual and touches on broader concerns about justice, accountability, and the protection of legal rights.
"His abduction, torture and public humiliation are not just an attack on one man. They are an assault on the rule of law itself," Byanyima said.
The former Kampala Lord Mayor, who also serves as president of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF), was reportedly taken from his home in Wakaliga by security personnel before being moved to an undisclosed location.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba later confirmed that he had ordered the operation. Since then, the military chief has shared several social media posts regarding Lukwago, including photographs that have generated widespread public debate.
Byanyima directly addressed President Museveni in her message, urging him to take action regarding the conduct of his son, Gen Muhoozi.
She questioned whether legal institutions can effectively function when powerful individuals appear able to disregard court processes and legal procedures without consequence.
According to Byanyima, the situation has created anxiety among many Ugandans who depend on the justice system to protect their rights and freedoms.
She also raised concerns about the safety of lawyers, judges, political prisoners, and ordinary citizens if legal safeguards are perceived to be weakening.
The controversy comes amid reports that Lukwago had been preparing to serve court summons on Gen Muhoozi in connection with legal proceedings involving Dr. Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale.
Opposition leaders and legal professionals have since called for transparency regarding Lukwago's detention and legal status.
