Activist and global health leader Winnie Byanyima has strongly condemned the arrest of former minister Miria Matembe, describing it as an act of intimidation that will draw international backlash.
In a statement shared shortly after confirmation of Matembe’s detention, Byanyima expressed solidarity with the outspoken former Ethics and Integrity minister, praising her long record in public service and activism.
“I stand with Miria Matembe, a national icon. She has led with courage, integrity and compassion,” Byanyima said.
Her remarks come amid growing concern over the circumstances surrounding Matembe’s arrest, which followed a security raid on her Kampala residence before she was later taken into custody.
Authorities have yet to publicly disclose the charges against her, raising questions among legal observers and human rights defenders.
Byanyima warned that the move would not silence Matembe, who has in recent weeks been vocal in criticizing alleged human rights abuses by security agencies.
“Miria will not bow to intimidation and brutality. She will not be silenced. Her abductor will achieve nothing except condemnation from every corner of the world,” she stated.
The arrest has intensified scrutiny on Uganda’s security operations, particularly regarding the handling of critics and opposition-leaning figures.
Civil society actors have raised concerns over due process, citing the lack of transparency and the manner in which the operation was conducted.
Byanyima also highlighted fears over Matembe’s safety, calling for urgent action to secure her release.
“I’m worried about her security and demand Miria’s immediate release,” she added.
Matembe, a veteran politician and former member of Uganda’s Constituent Assembly, has long been regarded as a vocal advocate for accountability and governance reforms.
Her arrest is likely to further fuel debate on civil liberties and the rule of law in the country
