A sombre mood has engulfed parts of Uganda following the announcement of the death of Ms Maggie Kiweesi, widow of the late musician AK-47.
The news was confirmed by Minister of State for Local Government Justine Nameere, who described the deceased as both a close relative and a dear friend.
In a formal statement released on Monday, Nameere said Kiweesi passed away on July 20, 2026.
The minister noted that the loss leaves behind young children who are now without both parents, a situation she termed as deeply heartbreaking for the family.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Miss Maggie Kiweesi, my dear cousin and friend,” Nameere said. “She leaves behind young children who are now complete orphans.”
Kiweesi was married to the late AK-47, a well-known figure in Uganda’s music industry whose death in 2015 shocked fans and the entertainment fraternity.
Her passing has now renewed public attention on the family, particularly the welfare of the children left behind.
Nameere indicated that, in line with official protocol, the information had been formally communicated to top government leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, Cabinet ministers, and Members of Parliament.
“IN ACCORDANCE WITH PROTOCOL, I HUMBLY INFORM… the general public,” she stated, listing senior government officials among those notified.
According to the family, vigil prayers are currently underway at Kiweesi’s parents’ home in Katabi, Entebbe.
The prayers are expected to continue for three days as the family awaits the arrival of relatives travelling from the United States.
Burial arrangements have been scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, in Kibbugga Village, Butambala District. Prayers will begin at midday ahead of the interment.
“We pray that her soul rests in eternal peace and that the comforting hand of the Almighty God stays with her children,” Nameere added.
The death of Kiweesi marks another tragic chapter for the family, drawing sympathy from leaders and members of the public across the country.
