The Minister for Local Government Balaam Ateenyi has paid tribute to the late Tooro monarch, Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, following the arrival of his remains in Uganda.
Ateenyi joined President Yoweri Museveni and other government officials at Entebbe International Airport to receive the body of the 32-year-old monarch, who died while undergoing medical treatment abroad.
In a statement following the solemn reception, the minister expressed condolences to the people of Tooro and acknowledged the President’s support during King Oyo’s illness and following his death.
“Earlier today, we joined His Excellency the President @KagutaMuseveni at Entebbe International Airport to receive and pay our respects to the remains of His Majesty Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV,” Ateenyi said.
The minister also thanked Museveni for what he described as unwavering support and care extended to the King during his illness.
According to Ateenyi, the President supported efforts surrounding King Oyo’s medical treatment and also contributed towards expenses related to his burial.
“We sincerely thank His Excellency the President for the unwavering support and care extended to His Majesty, including the support towards his medical bills and burial expenses,” he said.
Ateenyi said the gesture demonstrated solidarity with the people of Tooro as they mourn the loss of their cultural leader.
“We remain deeply grateful for this gesture of love, respect and solidarity with the people of Tooro during this difficult time,” he added.
King Oyo, who became Omukama of Tooro at the age of three following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in 1995, had one of the longest reigns among Uganda’s traditional monarchs.
His reign was associated with efforts to promote education, tourism, culture and youth empowerment in the Tooro region.
His death has triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, cultural institutions and members of the public, with preparations now underway for his final burial rites.
