Major General Paul Lokech rose from humble beginnings in northern Uganda to become one of the country’s most respected and battle-tested military commanders, earning regional recognition for his role in stabilising war-torn Somalia.
Born in 1966 in Kotido District, Lokech grew up in a region long affected by insecurity. Despite the challenges, he pursued education with determination before joining the National Resistance Army in 1987, shortly after the government of Yoweri Museveni took power.
His early years in the military coincided with ongoing insurgencies, shaping him into a disciplined and resilient officer.
Over the years, Lokech steadily climbed the ranks within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), taking on increasingly complex assignments.
He was involved in operations against the Lord's Resistance Army, a brutal insurgent group led by Joseph Kony.
His experience in counter-insurgency warfare built his reputation as a tactical and decisive field commander.
Lokech’s career reached a defining moment during his deployment to Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Serving as a commander of Ugandan forces, he led operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab during intense urban combat in Mogadishu.
His leadership was credited with helping push militants out of key positions in the capital, contributing to efforts to restore order in the fragile state.
It was during this period that he earned the nickname “Lion of Mogadishu,” a title that would define his legacy across the region.
He later returned to Somalia for a second tour, further cementing his influence in peacekeeping operations.
Beyond the battlefield, Lokech also held several strategic positions. He served as Uganda’s defence attaché in Russia and played roles in strengthening regional security, including assignments linked to South Sudan.
Within Uganda, he served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force and Commandant of the Rapid Deployment Capability Centre in Jinja.
In December 2020, Lokech transitioned from military service to policing after being appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police.
The move signalled trust in his operational expertise at a time when Uganda faced security challenges, including crime and election-related tensions.
However, his tenure in the police was short-lived. On August 21, 2021, Lokech died suddenly at his home in Wakiso District at the age of 55.
Authorities cited a blood clot as the cause of death, though his passing sparked widespread public debate due to its abrupt nature.
Today, General Paul Lokech is remembered as a fearless commander whose career spanned some of the most complex security operations in East Africa.
From the battlefields of northern Uganda to the streets of Mogadishu, his legacy remains tied to discipline, courage, and a commitment to regional stability.
