The office of Anita Among has issued a detailed clarification following a shooting incident involving a female driver near her Kampala residence, stating that the Speaker was not present at the time the incident occurred.

In a statement released by her Principal Secretary, Sabiti Joseph, the Speaker’s office moved to address growing public concern and speculation surrounding the circumstances of the shooting.

According to the statement, the Speaker was away from the capital when the incident happened.

“While en route from Bukedea, where she had gone to attend a family event, the Kampala Metropolitan Police informed the Rt Hon Speaker about an incident that had occurred near her residence, involving a police officer and a female driver, while she was not at home,” Sabiti said.

The incident, which occurred near the Speaker’s official residence along Mackinnon Road, involved a police officer attached to her security detail and a female motorist who was reportedly driving a Toyota Harrier.

Preliminary reports indicate that the driver was shot after allegedly failing to stop as instructed.

Sabiti emphasized that upon receiving the information, the Speaker took immediate steps to follow up on the matter.

“Upon her return to Kampala, she was briefed by police authorities and contacted the family of the victim to express her sympathies and offer support for their treatment,” he added.

The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny over the conduct of security personnel attached to high-ranking public officials, with the incident drawing public outrage and calls for accountability.

The Speaker’s office further noted that she has maintained direct engagement with the victim’s family as investigations continue.

“She remains in contact with the family and is closely monitoring the victim’s recovery. The officer involved has been handed over to the authorities for investigation,” Sabiti stated.

Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the identity of the female driver, who was reportedly rushed to a medical facility following the shooting.

Police say efforts are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the actions of both the officer and the motorist.

In his statement, Sabiti underscored the Speaker’s position on the need for transparency and accountability in handling the case.

“The Rt Hon Speaker has requested the Kampala Metropolitan Police to conduct expeditious investigations in the interest of justice. Additionally, she has asked the Kampala Metropolitan Police to inform the public about the details of the incident,” he said.
