Uganda Police have launched investigations into the suspected murder of Afrigo Band musician Matovu Moses, who died on Wednesday, September 24, following an alleged confrontation at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Moses went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30 a.m.
Police said Moses and the woman were reportedly leaving the residence when they were confronted by a male suspect who is alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
The confrontation is believed to have escalated into a physical altercation, although detectives are yet to establish the exact circumstances that led to the musician sustaining serious injuries.
“Moses sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider,” police said in the statement.
However, the musician later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police said the woman who was with Moses at the time of the incident has since been arrested and remains in custody as detectives seek to establish what happened before, during and after the confrontation.
The male suspect has reportedly been positively identified but is believed to have fled the scene following the incident.
According to police, efforts are underway to trace and arrest the suspect as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding Moses' death.
Authorities said they were also examining different accounts of the incident and cautioned against drawing conclusions before investigations are completed.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and subsequent death are yet to be fully established,” Kawala said.
Police urged members of the public to remain calm and allow detectives to conduct their investigations without interference.
The death of Moses has also drawn attention from Uganda's music fraternity, with police extending condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and fans.
Investigators are expected to provide further updates as they establish additional details and pursue the suspect believed to have fled from the scene.
Police said all necessary measures were being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts surrounding the musician's death.
