The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Military Police Brigade has launched a nationwide operation targeting vehicles without registration numbers, valid licences and those violating traffic regulations.
The operation, dubbed Operation Tekeleza Sheria, is being conducted in coordination with the Uganda Traffic Police and has commenced in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area before expanding across the country.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, said the operation would target several categories of vehicles and motorists.
“The UPDF Military Police Brigade, while working and coordinating with the Uganda Traffic Police has with immediate effect commenced operations within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and the country at large,” Magezi said.
According to the notice, security officers will also be subjected to the operation, with authorities warning that those found driving without valid driving permits or licences will be arrested.
Vehicles with covered number plates are also being targeted, including those belonging to members of security agencies and government ministries, departments and agencies.
Magezi said drivers found using such vehicles would be arrested and prosecuted for what the UPDF described as gross violations of traffic regulations.
The operation will further focus on civilian-registered vehicles found carrying military stores and other military-related items.
“Civilian registered vehicles found in possession of military stores such as military jackets, whether displayed on driver’s seats or not, and other military paraphernalia will be impounded,” Magezi said.
He added that drivers or owners of such vehicles would be arrested and subjected to court martial proceedings under the UPDF Act 2025, as amended.
The UPDF did not give a specific end date for the operation, saying it would continue until further notice.
Magezi urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies as the authorities intensify enforcement of traffic regulations.
The operation comes as Ugandan security agencies continue efforts to enforce compliance with road safety and vehicle registration requirements, while also addressing the unauthorised use or display of military-related items by civilians.
