Activist and scholar Stella Nyanzi has once again taken her campaign for justice beyond Uganda’s borders, this time speaking out about the disappearance of poet and political activist Sam Mugumya.

In a post shared on Facebook on Sunday, Nyanzi said she wore her yellow Luzira Women Prison uniform during a red carpet event at Rotes Rathaus in Berlin, where she read out poems Mugumya wrote while detained in Ndolo Military Prison.

She explained that her performance was a protest against his abduction and enforced disappearance.

Mugumya, a longtime opposition figure, was allegedly abducted on 26 August 2025, shortly after returning to Uganda from exile.

Despite a judge’s order that his body be produced “dead or alive,” his family, lawyers and friends say they have not seen or heard from him.

“I refuse to be silent about Sam’s abduction and enforced disappearance. WE REFUSE TO BE VICTIMS!” Nyanzi wrote, calling on Ugandans to demand answers about his fate.

Her protest has drawn renewed attention to Mugumya’s case at a time when human rights groups continue to raise concern about enforced disappearances in Uganda.

Activists argue that the practice threatens not only opposition voices but also ordinary citizens who dare to challenge those in power.

The Ugandan government has not issued an official response to the calls for Mugumya’s release or disclosure of his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, his disappearance has deepened fears about the safety of political dissidents in the country.
