Activist Anthony Natif has sharply criticized Joel Ssenyonyi’s performance as Leader of the Opposition (LOP) in Parliament, saying he has failed to make an impact in holding the government accountable.
In a post on X, Natif described Ssenyonyi’s tenure as “a spectacular failure,” arguing that even President Yoweri Museveni has publicly acknowledged the current Parliament as one that allows him to “sleep very well.”
“The truth is Mr. Joel Ssenyonyi has been a spectacular failure at LOP. The numbers easily show this,” Natif wrote. “President Museveni even said this parliament, where Mr. Ssenyonyi is LOP, has allowed him to sleep very well and he’s grateful.”
Natif questioned why the National Unity Platform (NUP), which commands the largest opposition bloc in Parliament, has not expressed concern over what he termed as poor performance.
He suggested that Ugandans are growing weary of rhetoric and will soon demand concrete policy alternatives from opposition leaders.
“That the party commanding most opposition seats somehow doesn’t seem to be embarrassed by that dismal performance is telling. Like we’ve been saying for a while, the people will get tired of hearing ‘Museveni agende’ and actually ask for tangible plans from his major opponents," he said.
Ssenyonyi, who took over the LOP office from Mathias Mpuuga in December 2023, has faced mounting scrutiny from both ruling party supporters and sections of the opposition.
