General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has triggered fresh political discussion after posting a strong statement on X on Wednesday morning in which he openly referenced taking over leadership after President Yoweri Museveni.
In the post, Muhoozi made one of his most direct remarks yet on succession, linking it to both entitlement and divine sanction, a framing that immediately drew attention across political and online circles.
He stated:
“After Mzee Museveni, We shall take charge of the country, that is not only our birthright but our God right!! It is inevitable. And we shall not shrink from that responsibility! Let us see those who will wage war against the will of Almighty God.”
The message quickly spread across social media, drawing attention to Uganda’s long-running succession debate and the political future of the president’s son.
Muhoozi, a senior officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the son of President Museveni, has in the past made similar remarks on X regarding leadership succession.
He has previously suggested both interest in succeeding his father and, at other times, distanced himself from immediate electoral ambitions, including statements indicating he would not contest in the 2026 polls.
Despite the shifting positions, his online activity has consistently kept him at the centre of political conversations, particularly on questions surrounding leadership transition in Uganda.
His posts often combine military language with political commentary, a style that has attracted both strong support and criticism.
Wednesday’s remarks come at a time when succession politics in Uganda remains sensitive, with President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, yet to clearly outline a transition plan.
The debate over what happens after his rule continues to shape political discussions within ruling circles and the wider public.
Muhoozi’s statement also revives earlier controversies linked to his social media activity, where he has previously made bold remarks about opposition figures and national politics.
These posts have repeatedly sparked reactions from political actors and analysts who view them as reflecting deeper dynamics within the country’s power structure.
