The National Unity Platform (NUP) has intensified efforts to secure the release of its senior officials detained at Kitalya Mini-Max Prison.
This morning, NUP Secretary General David Rubongoya visited Deputy President Hon. Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, who has been held on charges of terrorism described by party officials as “trumped up.”
Rubongoya said Kivumbi remains in good spirits and continues to inspire supporters to stay committed to the party’s struggle, emphasizing that his detention is only a temporary phase in their political fight.
“The Deputy President is of strong spirit and encourages everyone to fight on, knowing that this is just a phase of the struggle,” Rubongoya posted on X.
He added that NUP’s legal team, working alongside other lawyers, is pursuing all avenues to secure Kivumbi’s release from what he described as an unfortunate situation.
During the visit, Rubongoya also met with other long-term detainees, including Machete Yasin Ssekitoleko, Gaddafi Mugumya, Wakabi Smart Grace, Kalanzi Sharif, and Kintu Abdallah, who have been incarcerated for over five years.
The detained officials urged the public to continue advocating for their freedom, highlighting the ongoing human rights concerns surrounding political detentions in Uganda.
The NUP leadership reaffirmed its commitment to legal and advocacy campaigns aimed at challenging the detentions.
Party officials stressed the importance of national and international attention to pressure authorities for the release of all political prisoners.
