Nakawa West MP and National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi has accused the Ugandan government of misleading the public over the security situation surrounding party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who is currently in hiding.

In a statement on Thursday, Ssenyonyi dismissed official claims that Bobi Wine is a free man and not under threat, arguing that events on the ground point to a coordinated state operation against him.

He said police and military officers have continued to maintain a heavy presence around Bobi Wine’s residence, effectively blocking access to family members, aides, and visitors.

“Government mouthpieces keep insisting that no one is after Bobi Wine, yet his home remains under siege,” Ssenyonyi said, questioning the sincerity of such assurances.

He added that the continued security deployment contradicts claims of respect for the rule of law and individual freedoms.

The MP further challenged authorities to follow legal procedures if Bobi Wine is suspected of committing any offence.

He argued that harassment and intimidation of family members cannot replace lawful processes such as issuing police summons.

“If there is an offence, why not issue summons instead of subjecting his family to fear and uncertainty?” Ssenyonyi asked.

Bobi Wine, a former presidential candidate and one of President Yoweri Museveni’s most prominent critics, has frequently accused security agencies of targeting him and NUP supporters through arrests, surveillance, and violence.

The government has previously denied these allegations, maintaining that security operations around opposition figures are lawful and necessary.

The latest remarks by Ssenyonyi are expected to reignite debate over political freedoms, policing, and the treatment of opposition leaders as Uganda edges closer to another tense political period.
