The Uganda Police Force has clarified the circumstances surrounding an incident that occurred this afternoon, 4 January 2026, in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council, Sironko District, involving a motorist during the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate’s campaign.
According to the police, the driver, identified as Lubulwa Hamza, was operating a Toyota Wish bearing registration number UBM 430K.
While driving recklessly, he reportedly overtook the candidate’s convoy and ignored attempts by the security detail to stop him. During the maneuver, the driver nearly collided with a security vehicle, prompting officers to pursue and intercept him.
Upon being stopped, Lubulwa allegedly resisted lawful arrest. In the scuffle that followed, he sustained a head injury and was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.
Police emphasized that the injury was not caused by gunfire, countering circulating claims that the driver had been shot.
“Allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence,” said SP Taitika Rogers, Police Public Relations Officer for the Elgon region.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
The police maintained that the intervention was necessary to protect the safety of the NUP candidate and the accompanying security personnel.
The incident comes amid heightened security measures for political campaigns across Uganda, as parties prepare for upcoming elections.
Police have assured that they are reviewing the matter and taking appropriate steps to ensure accountability while maintaining law and order.
SP Rogers called on drivers and members of the public to adhere strictly to road safety rules, particularly around convoys, emphasizing that reckless driving near political campaigns will not be tolerated.
The investigation into the incident continues, and further updates are expected from the Elgon regional police command.
