Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has challenged newly promoted government official Morris Muhindo to uphold integrity and professionalism following his appointment as Under Secretary at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Uganda.
Speaking during a gathering held to celebrate Muhindo’s promotion, Tayebwa said the appointment should not merely be seen as a moment of celebration but as the beginning of a new responsibility in public service.
The Deputy Speaker said serving in a sensitive government institution such as the defence ministry requires discipline, trust, and a strong sense of duty to the country.
“I do not look at this as a celebration but rather the launch of a new challenge and responsibility,” Tayebwa said. “Public service, especially in such a sensitive institution, demands integrity, discipline and a deep sense of duty.”
Tayebwa urged Muhindo to maintain the character traits that have earned him respect among colleagues and leaders, describing him as sober, reliable, and trustworthy.
He further emphasized that officials working with government and classified documents must exercise the highest levels of caution and responsibility.
“Handling government and classified documents requires the highest level of trust,” Tayebwa noted, adding that protecting state secrets while maintaining professionalism and transparency is critical for anyone holding such a position.
The Deputy Speaker also encouraged Muhindo to embrace continuous learning as part of leadership growth. He advised the newly appointed Under Secretary to invest in personal development through reading and regular professional training.
As part of his advice, Tayebwa recommended the book The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav, saying it explains the difference between external power and authentic power based on integrity and accountability.
Tayebwa expressed confidence that Muhindo will serve diligently under the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni and the senior leadership at the ministry.
He concluded by congratulating Muhindo and wishing him success as he begins his new role in serving Uganda.
