National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has been awarded the 2026 “Leader in Courage and Innovation” honour in the United States, using his acceptance message to highlight concerns over alleged human rights abuses in Uganda.
The award was presented by the Renew Democracy Initiative during an event held in New York City.
In a statement released after the ceremony, Kyagulanyi dedicated the recognition to Ugandans he says have suffered in the country’s political struggle.
“I dedicate this award to the Ugandan men and women who have been killed, unfairly detained, or disappeared in our collective pursuit for a better Uganda,” he said, adding that their sacrifices would contribute to the country’s eventual transformation.
Kyagulanyi, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, has frequently accused state agencies of targeting opposition supporters.
Ugandan authorities have consistently denied the allegations, insisting that security operations are lawful and aimed at maintaining public order.
He also recognised fellow award recipients, including former US official John Bolton, Canadian politician Chrystia Freeland, and US Senator Mark Kelly, commending their contributions to democratic governance.
The recognition further elevates Kyagulanyi’s international standing as a prominent opposition figure.
While his supporters view the award as validation of his advocacy, critics argue that such international endorsements do not fully reflect the complexities of Uganda’s domestic political landscape.
He concluded his remarks with a message of hope, stating that Uganda would ultimately achieve freedom.
