National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro has broken his silence days after the burial of his wife, sharing an emotional message from prison after he was denied bail to attend her final rites.

In a letter written a few days after the burial, Mufumbiro revealed he was unable to be present during his wife’s last moments or lay her to rest.

“It’s been a week. One week since my wife took her last breath. One week since the world went quiet. And I wasn’t there.”

He described the experience as devastating, saying he could not “hold her hand one last time” or “throw soil on her grave.”

“I’m speaking to you from prison. They denied me bail. They denied me the chance to hold her hand one last time. To kiss her forehead. To throw soil on her grave. To say goodbye.”

The detained opposition official said mourning from prison had deepened his grief, leaving him with what he termed an overwhelming sense of loss.

He paid tribute to his late wife, Edith, recalling her unwavering support throughout his political journey and personal life.

“I miss her so much it hurts to breathe. I miss her voice in the morning. I miss her texting me before a fight. I miss the way she believed in me when nobody else did.”

Mufumbiro also thanked family, friends, and supporters who stepped in to organize and attend the burial in his absence, crediting them with ensuring his wife received a dignified send-off.

“You all laid her to rest for me. You did what I should have done. For that, I will thank you for the rest of my life. You gave her dignity when I was in chains.”

In a deeply personal message, he apologised to his children and reaffirmed his love for his late wife.

“To my children Daddy is sorry. To my wife Edith, I hope you can hear me. I love you. I will always love you.”
