Eleven people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a road accident on the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in the early hours of Tuesday, 7th April 2026.
SP Kananura Michael, Head of Public Relations at the Directorate for Public Relations and Road Safety, said the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 am at Kalegero Corner.
The collision involved a Kasaba Bus Company bus, registration UAL 492H, and a Tata lorry, registration UBH 013Q.
“The injured victims were rushed to Lyantonde Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary pending post-mortem examinations,” SP Kananura confirmed.
He added that investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene at the accident site, with passengers trapped in the wreckage and bystanders rushing to assist before emergency teams arrived.
Hospital staff reported that victims are receiving treatment for a range of injuries, from minor cuts to severe trauma.
The accident highlights ongoing safety concerns on Uganda’s busy highways, particularly along long-distance routes such as Masaka–Mbarara.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to observe traffic regulations, avoid over-speeding, and refrain from night-time overloading, which often contributes to fatal collisions.
Road safety experts note that crashes remain a major public health issue in Uganda, with human error, vehicle conditions, and road infrastructure frequently cited as contributing factors.
SP Kananura called on motorists to exercise heightened caution, especially during night travel, and appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid investigators.
Authorities have pledged a full investigation and are expected to release preliminary findings soon.
