Former Miss Tourism Uganda Phiona Kyeru has opened up about the often overlooked realities of living abroad, shedding light on the silent achievements that define many Africans’ experiences in the diaspora.

In a reflective statement following her relocation to the United Kingdom, Kyeru emphasized that while much attention is given to the hardships of life abroad, little is said about the personal milestones that come with it.

She described these as “quiet wins” — achievements that may not attract public attention but carry deep personal and family significance.

Among these milestones, Kyeru highlighted the ability to support family back home without financial strain.

From paying hospital bills without hesitation to consistently sending school fees, she noted that such moments represent a level of financial stability that was previously difficult to attain.

Her remarks also touched on the cultural expectations placed on firstborns in many African families.

According to Kyeru, being the first point of contact during times of need comes with immense pressure, as responsibility often falls squarely on their shoulders.

However, she observed that living abroad has, for the first time, made it possible to meet these expectations more effectively.

Kyeru contrasted her current experience with life back home, where limited income often struggled to match growing responsibilities.

In the diaspora, she said, the balance has shifted, allowing her not only to respond to family needs but to actively contribute to long-term investments such as land ownership and education for relatives.

Despite these gains, she acknowledged the emotional and environmental challenges that come with relocation. The cold climate, isolation, and adjustment struggles remain significant hurdles for many living far from home.

Even so, Kyeru underscored that these sacrifices are often made in pursuit of a broader goal — building a better future for families back home. She concluded by urging more recognition of these untold aspects of diaspora life, which, she believes, deserve equal attention alongside the challenges.
