University Guild President Ssentamu Charles has embarked on an educational mission to China, focusing on youth development, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
The visit aims to study successful strategies that have empowered millions of young people across Asia.
“I am in China to study innovative youth development strategies, leadership programs, and entrepreneurship ecosystems that have successfully empowered millions of young people,” Ssentamu said.
He noted that China’s rapid growth in vocational training, digital skills, and youth innovation hubs presents lessons that could be adapted for Uganda and the broader African continent.
During his visit, Ssentamu plans to engage with education institutions, innovation centers, and startup incubators.
The research will focus on identifying practical approaches to equip Ugandan youth with the skills needed in an evolving economy, particularly in technology, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
Experts say Uganda faces significant youth unemployment challenges, with nearly 70 percent of the population under 30.
Programs that enhance practical skills, foster innovation, and support young entrepreneurs could reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth.
Ssentamu’s research seeks to explore how lessons from China’s model can be localized to suit Uganda’s unique economic and social landscape.
“This study is not just about learning from others but tailoring solutions that can create real opportunities for our youth,” he added.
The Guild president emphasized that his findings will inform future programs at Makerere University and beyond, aiming to build a generation of skilled, innovative, and self-reliant young Ugandans.
Ssentamu’s trip reflects a growing trend among African student leaders seeking international best practices to address domestic challenges.
