Uganda Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucungizi has paid tribute to his former teacher during a visit to Kabale District, highlighting the enduring impact of educators in shaping society.
In a reflective statement, Mucungizi recounted visiting his former Christian Religious Education (CRE) teacher from Kigezi High School, identified as Kaakaabaale, now aged 90.
Despite his advanced age, Mucungizi noted that the veteran teacher remains as lively, humorous, and kind as he was decades ago when he taught students about navigating life in a changing society.
The Electoral Commission official revealed that the elderly teacher prefers to be addressed using the Rukiga term “omugurusi,” meaning a respected elder, instead of the more commonly used “Mzee.”
According to Mucungizi, the distinction reflects cultural identity and respect for heritage within the Kigezi community.
The visit took place at Kaakaabaale’s home on Rugarama Hill in Kabale, where Mucungizi said he had the opportunity to listen to a wealth of stories drawn from both past and present experiences.
He described the encounter as both enlightening and nostalgic, offering a rare glimpse into the life and wisdom of a man who has witnessed significant societal changes over the decades.
Mucungizi used the moment to express gratitude to his former teacher, acknowledging his role in shaping not only academic understanding but also personal values and character.
