National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Rubongoya has provided an update on the ongoing court case involving Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, saying the party remains confident that the charges will eventually collapse for lack of evidence.
Speaking after attending proceedings in Butambala, Rubongoya said the party leadership had returned to the area to show solidarity with Kivumbi, who also serves as NUP’s Deputy President for Buganda.
He confirmed that two juveniles linked to the case had been released on bail, describing it as a positive development for the accused persons.
However, he questioned the continued prosecution of others still facing trial.
Rubongoya said the opposition believes the charges against Kivumbi and his co-accused are politically motivated and unsupported by credible evidence.
“We hope the charges can either be withdrawn or the trial begins in earnest so that the truth comes out,” he said, adding that the legal process has been marked by delays and inconsistencies.
He further described the proceedings as a “ping-pong” legal process, arguing that it amounts to persecution disguised as prosecution.
According to him, the handling of the case reflects a broader pattern of political intimidation targeting opposition figures.
Rubongoya also raised concerns over a separate unresolved matter involving killings reported at Kivumbi’s home, saying justice has not been served for the victims.
He claimed that while those accused of the killings remain free, supporters and associates of Kivumbi continue to face detention.
“There must be justice for the people who were murdered in cold blood,” he said, questioning the fairness of the ongoing investigations and prosecutions.
The case against Kivumbi, who was arrested earlier this year alongside several co-accused, includes allegations linked to post-election violence and terrorism-related charges.
Prosecutors have maintained that investigations are ongoing and that the accused will be held to account if sufficient evidence is established.
The matter remains before court, with hearings expected to continue as both the defence and prosecution prepare for further proceedings.
