State Withdraws Earlier Charges Against Lawyer Male Mabirizi, Files Fresh Allegations

The State has withdrawn previous Computer Misuse charges against lawyer Male Mabirizi, replacing them with fresh allegations that have intensified the legal battle surrounding him.

The initial charges, which accused Mabirizi of spreading malicious information and promoting hate speech, have been superseded by new counts.

He now faces allegations of broadcasting without a license and publishing false information concerning Chief Justice Flavian Zeija.

During proceedings at Buganda Road Court, Mabirizi declined to enter a plea on the new charges. Instead, he requested the recusal of Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, citing potential bias in handling his case.

His request has set the stage for further legal deliberations before the matter proceeds.

The court remanded Mabirizi to Luzira Prison, where he will remain in custody until April 15, 2026, when the next hearing is scheduled.

Legal experts suggest the case could become a landmark in discussions on media regulation, freedom of expression, and the limits of public commentary on judicial figures.

Mabirizi, a vocal critic of government policies and judicial conduct, has often been at the center of controversial legal matters in Uganda.

His latest charges come amid growing debates over media freedom and the role of digital platforms in disseminating information.

Observers say the withdrawal of the earlier charges and filing of fresh allegations signals the State’s focus on addressing specific broadcasts rather than general online activity.

The outcome of Mabirizi’s case could set significant precedents regarding licensing requirements for broadcasters and the boundaries of permissible commentary on judicial authorities in Uganda.
