Police in Wakiso District have arrested a 39-year-old man following a viral social media video allegedly showing the defilement of an 8-year-old girl, in an incident that has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for child protection vigilance.

The incident occurred on 16 April 2026 in Mabombwe Village, Mabombwe Parish, Mende Sub-county, Wakiso District.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Ssebagala Moses, a boda boda rider and resident of the same area, is alleged to have approached the victim while she was outside with her sister

It is further alleged that the man gave the children a mobile phone to watch cartoons before placing the victim on his lap, where the disturbing act was reportedly captured in the circulating footage that led to his arrest.

Police condemned all forms of child abuse, urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure close supervision of children in order to prevent such incidents.

The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be produced in court as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators said they are reviewing the viral footage alongside witness statements from residents of Mabombwe Village to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Police have also indicated that digital evidence will play a key role in supporting the prosecution once the suspect is formally charged.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to tackling gender-based violence and child protection violations, calling on the public to promptly report suspected cases to security agencies for swift action.

The case has drawn concern among local residents, with child rights advocates emphasizing the need for stronger community awareness and protection mechanisms to safeguard vulnerable minors.

As investigations continue, police say further updates will be communicated through official channels once new developments arise in the case in accordance with due legal process.
