Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda has described the security operation conducted at the residences of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among as a defining moment in Uganda’s handling of alleged corruption at high levels of government.

He said the operation reflected unusual decisiveness and institutional coordination. In his remarks, Mwenda stated:

“The Saturday 3am SFC raid at the home of our pre-current speaker of parliament, Anita Annet Among (AAA), is unprecedented. The joint security operation at her home, confiscating anything and everything of value, including cash and other luxury items, speaks volumes. The action required bold decision-making and a stubborn resolution.”

Mwenda added that the development pointed to a shift in how state agencies are handling elite corruption cases, arguing that the scale and timing of the operation signalled a more forceful approach.

He further linked the events to Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, suggesting the operation reflects his growing influence within the security establishment.

In his commentary, Mwenda said:

“And it is a vintage signature of the CDF, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Those who doubted him now know what kind of political animal Uganda has to contend with.”

Mwenda argued that Muhoozi’s recent public interventions on governance and public spending should not be dismissed.

He pointed to earlier criticism of luxury purchases by public officials, including a reported $1 million Rolls Royce linked to the former Speaker, which had already drawn public attention.

He also referenced Muhoozi’s comments on government expenditure, stating that fiscal authorities should take them seriously.

Mwenda noted:

“Muhoozi had tweeted his displeasure with the speaker for buying a $1m Rolls Royce. He then said the budget of parliament should be cut because it is wasteful. The ministry of finance should take that tweet seriously.”

The journalist further highlighted political signals from the Patriotic League Uganda (PLU), which reportedly withdrew its endorsement of Anita Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa.

He also cited claims that Muhoozi had expressed support for Defence Minister Oboth Oboth as a preferred candidate for the speakership.

Mwenda added that these developments point to shifting political alignments within Uganda’s leadership structures, with implications for future parliamentary leadership contests.
