MP Justine Nameere Arrest: Political Analyst Explains What It Means for NRM Politics

The arrest of Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere has triggered fresh debate over political power and internal dynamics within Uganda’s ruling establishment, with political analyst David Soita Masinde describing the incident as a clear sign that perceived political protection within the system may no longer hold.

Nameere was arrested on Friday evening in Masaka, shortly after her swearing-in, during what witnesses described as a sudden operation involving armed men in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles.

The incident reportedly caused panic, with claims of force and confusion at the scene, and no immediate official explanation from authorities.

Commenting on the development, Masinde said the arrest reflects a shift that many within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) may not have anticipated.

He noted that tactics previously criticised by opposition figures are now being experienced within the ruling ranks.

“For years, these methods were associated with handling dissenting voices,” Masinde said. “What has happened now shows that even those within the system are not exempt.”

He dismissed any suggestion that the arrest signals a return to accountability or strengthening of institutions, arguing instead that it points to tighter control at the centre of power.

According to him, such actions are meant to send a message across the political class.

“This is not about the rule of law asserting itself,” he said. “It is about demonstrating control and reminding those within the system that loyalty alone is not a guarantee.”

Masinde also weighed in on the silence from senior NRM figures following the arrest, saying it reflects the political reality many insiders are navigating.

He argued that speaking out in such circumstances carries risks that few are willing to take.

“The silence is calculated,” he said. “In this kind of environment, raising your voice can easily place you in the same situation.”

Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive statement explaining the circumstances of Nameere’s arrest or confirm her whereabouts, further fueling speculation and concern.

The incident is expected to heighten scrutiny on the use of security operations in political matters, especially at a time when internal competition and alignments within Uganda’s political landscape remain sensitive.
