Former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has joined political allies in paying tribute to Dr Kizza Besigye as supporters marked his 70th birthday while he remains in detention at Luzira Prison.

Mpuuga attended a commemoration event organised by the Federal of Freedom Party (PFF) in Kampala, where opposition figures reflected on Besigye’s long political career and his continued incarceration.

Besigye has been in detention since November 2024 after being arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, and returned to Uganda.

His case initially went through a military tribunal before being transferred to civilian courts following legal interventions.

Speaking after the event, Mpuuga said the gathering was both a birthday commemoration and a reflection on Besigye’s political journey.

“I joined comrades at PFF Uganda to celebrate Dr Kzza Besigye 70th birthday,” Mpuuga said.

He noted that despite being in prison, Besigye continues to represent a strong political voice.

“From his prison cell at Luzira, Dr KB stands as an unwavering symbol of resistance, courage, and steadfast commitment to democratic ideals and the pursuit of national transformation,” he said.

Mpuuga added that the occasion went beyond celebration, describing it as a moment to acknowledge Besigye’s long involvement in Uganda’s political struggle.

“It was, therefore, not merely a celebration of his birthday, but of his enduring legacy, resilience, sacrifice, and longstanding dedication to the cause of a just and free Uganda,” he said.

Besigye, a former presidential candidate and one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures, has spent more than a year in detention as his case moves through the courts.

His legal team has repeatedly raised concerns over his continued remand and health condition.

His supporters argue that his detention is politically driven, while government maintains that he is facing lawful charges that are being handled by the judiciary.
