A past prediction by Ugandan journalist Timothy Kalyegira is drawing renewed attention amid the ongoing political troubles facing former Speaker Anita Among, whose influence has significantly waned following corruption investigations and mounting pressure within the ruling establishment.
In an October 30, 2025 post, Kalyegira suggested that Among’s political decline was imminent, even at a time when she appeared firmly in control.
“As for Among herself, since becoming Speaker, she is showing a type of ambition that her boss, President Museveni, is already taking note of,” he wrote, adding that “Among’s fall is just around the corner.”
At the time, Among was at the height of her political power. She played a central role in President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign activities, often acting as the master of ceremonies at rallies while also serving as the de facto chief campaign manager.
Her visibility and influence within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) positioned her as one of the most powerful political figures in Uganda.
However, recent developments suggest a sharp reversal of fortunes. Among is currently under investigation over allegations including corruption, abuse of office, and illicit enrichment.
The probe has reportedly extended to her properties and parliamentary offices, signaling the seriousness of the accusations.
In a move widely interpreted as a response to the mounting pressure, Among stepped back from the speakership race, pledging to cooperate with investigators.
Political observers view this as a significant indicator of declining support within key power circles.
Kalyegira has since revisited his earlier remarks, pointing to them as evidence of his reading of internal political dynamics.
In a recent post, he noted that October 2025 marked the peak of Among’s influence, yet he had already sensed an impending shift.
“Among was at her peak,” he wrote, “but I sensed the fall was just around the corner.”
Analysts say such predictions often reflect a deeper understanding of internal power structures within Uganda’s ruling system, where shifts in loyalty and perception can quickly alter political trajectories.
Among’s situation has also been compounded by international scrutiny. Sanctions imposed by Western governments over corruption allegations further dented her reputation, both domestically and globally.
While investigations are still ongoing and no formal conviction has been made, the unfolding events point to a significant turning point in Among’s political career.
Whether she can recover politically remains uncertain, but the current trajectory aligns closely with the early warning issued months before her troubles became public.
