Former Kampala Lord Mayor and lawyer Erias Lukwago has commented on the ongoing controversy surrounding Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, warning that the developments could weaken Parliament’s independence.

His remarks come at a time when Among is facing increased scrutiny following a security raid at her residence in Kampala and renewed corruption-related allegations.

The situation has triggered political debate over accountability, governance, and the separation of powers.

Lukwago said the unfolding events present broader political implications beyond the individual controversy.

“AAA’s antics offered Gen Museveni an opportunity to decapitate Parliament. Imagine the watchdog being checked by the Executive!” he said.

He suggested that the situation risks shifting Parliament from an oversight institution into one influenced by the Executive, raising concerns about institutional independence.

The remarks come as reports continue to circulate about investigations linked to alleged corruption, financial misconduct, and scrutiny of asset declarations involving the Speaker.

Security agencies are reported to have conducted operations at her home as part of ongoing probes, although full official details remain limited.

Political observers have also pointed to growing tension within government circles, with speculation about pressure on Among regarding her future in the speakership. .

The controversy has been further amplified by past international sanctions imposed on Among by Western governments over corruption allegations, including claims tied to misuse of public resources. She has previously denied wrongdoing.

Lukwago’s comments add to a widening political debate over the state of accountability and the balance of power between Uganda’s institutions.

His remarks reflect concerns from sections of the opposition that current developments may be reshaping the role of Parliament in a way that reduces its independence.
