Former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza has spoken out following the arrest of Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere, calling for adherence to human rights standards and humane treatment in all arrests.

Nameere was reportedly arrested on Friday evening, May 15, 2026, just hours after being sworn into Parliament. The incident occurred in Masaka City as she joined supporters in a procession heading to Liberation Square to celebrate her swearing-in.

Witnesses say her convoy was intercepted along Circular Road by plain-clothed operatives driving an unmarked white Toyota Hiace, commonly referred to as a “drone.”

She was reportedly pulled out of her vehicle and taken to an unknown location. Some of her supporters were injured during the confrontation.

Authorities have not issued an official explanation for the arrest. Early reports indicate she could be under investigation over alleged possession of funds linked to the ongoing Speakership race, though this has not been independently confirmed. Police have since said they were not aware of the operation and have opened inquiries into the incident.

In her remarks, Kiiza emphasized the need for lawful and humane conduct during arrests, warning against actions that could erode public trust in institutions.

“Following the reported arbitrary arrest of Hon. Justine Nameere, a member of the ruling party, we must all agree on one fundamental principle, that arrests and detentions must be conducted humanely at all times,” she said.

Kiiza also stressed the need for dignity, particularly in cases involving women.

“In cases involving women, additional sensitivity and respect for their dignity must be observed,” she added.

She further noted that political affiliation should not influence how individuals are treated by security agencies.

“Political affiliation should never determine how a person is treated. Whether one belongs to the ruling party, the opposition, or no party at all, every citizen is entitled to the full protection of their human rights,” she said.

The arrest has drawn attention within political circles, with observers noting the unusual nature of a ruling party MP being detained in such circumstances, especially amid heightened contestation around parliamentary leadership positions.
