Is Museveni Under House Arrest? Makerere Scholar Raises Questions Amid Rising Tension and Presidential Silence

Political tension in Uganda continues to escalate following a series of controversial actions involving military-led arrests and media shutdowns, with Makerere University scholar and political theorist Yusuf Sserunkuma now raising fresh concerns over the state of governance.

In recent days, the arrest of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, the detention of former Ethics Minister Miria Matembe, and the shutdown of Nation Media Group (NMG) outlets have drawn widespread public attention and criticism.

All the actions are reportedly linked to directives issued by Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Commenting on the developments, Sserunkuma questioned the silence of President Yoweri Museveni, suggesting that the lack of direct communication from the head of state could signal deeper political shifts within government.

“Yoweri Museveni loves (loved?) talking to the country. Either writes us a long love letter or asks all media houses to broadcast him,” Sserunkuma stated.

He added, “If he does not talk to the country before the end of the week, then it is fair to conclude our man is under house arrest. The most slow-motioned coup ever!”

The remarks have since sparked debate across political and academic circles, with some interpreting them as a warning about potential power struggles within the state, while others view them as speculative commentary.

The arrest of Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure, and Matembe, a long-time government critic, has raised questions about the increasing role of the military in civilian affairs.

At the same time, the closure of major media outlets has heightened concerns over press freedom and access to information.

Analysts note that Museveni has historically maintained a strong public presence, often addressing the nation during moments of political tension.

His continued silence, therefore, is being closely monitored as a possible indicator of internal dynamics within the ruling establishment.

As the situation unfolds, attention is now shifting to whether the president will address the country and clarify the unfolding events, or whether the current trajectory signals a deeper political transition.
