Former minister and veteran politician Asuman Kiyingi has issued one of the strongest criticisms yet following the arrest of opposition leader and lawyer Erias Lukwago, warning that the incident represents a serious challenge to Uganda's legal and constitutional order.
In a detailed statement released after Lukwago's arrest, Kiyingi argued that the events surrounding the opposition leader's detention go beyond an ordinary political dispute and raise fundamental questions about the independence of the legal profession, the judiciary, and the rule of law.
Lukwago, who serves as president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and is also part of the legal team representing opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, was reportedly arrested from his residence in Wakaliga by security operatives. His detention has since generated widespread reactions from political leaders, lawyers, civil society organizations, and human rights activists.
Kiyingi described the operation as a direct challenge to constitutional principles and questioned the circumstances under which a senior advocate could be detained while carrying out his professional duties.
According to the former minister, the timing of Lukwago's arrest has raised concerns because it reportedly occurred as the lawyer was involved in legal processes connected to a court matter involving Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.GET FULL STORY HERE.
