Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has responded to remarks by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who suggested that he could be among the next opposition figures targeted for arrest following the detention of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

His response comes after Muhoozi intensified political tensions by stating that Ssenyonyi and former MP Ssemujju Nganda would “follow very soon” and that he was pushing for changes in parliamentary leadership, including replacing the Leader of the Opposition.

In a response, Ssenyonyi said:

"You are used to bootlickers that’s why you hate those who tell you the truth Again your disregard for the rule of law is going to be your downfall and soon"

His response comes after Muhoozi intensified political tensions by stating that Ssenyonyi and former MP Ssemujju Nganda would “follow very soon” and that he was pushing for changes in parliamentary leadership, including replacing the Leader of the Opposition.

Muhoozi also claimed he had instructed the Patriotic League Uganda to explore ways of removing Ssenyonyi from office.

The developments have sparked concern among political actors and civil society, with warnings that such statements could heighten tensions between security institutions and elected leaders.

Critics have called for adherence to constitutional processes and respect for democratic governance.

Ssenyonyi maintained that respect for the rule of law remains central to national stability, urging all actors to operate within legal frameworks as political disagreements intensify.

The remarks also follow the arrest of Erias Lukwago, which has deepened political debate over the role of the military in civilian affairs.
