Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr. Miria Matembe was released on bail on Wednesday evening, July 1, 2026, following a day-long court process at Luzira Magistrates Court.
Her release comes after she was remanded over charges of promoting sectarianism, a case that has drawn public attention across Uganda.
Matembe had spent a night at Luzira Prison after prosecutors accused her of making remarks in a media interview that could incite sectarian divisions.
During the bail hearing, her lawyers argued that she is 73 years old, in poor health, and has a fixed place of residence, making her eligible for release.
The court granted bail after considering submissions from both the defence and prosecution.
Following her release, activist and social media personality Gideon Nova Kwikiriza criticized All Saints Church, Nakasero, over its response during Matembe’s detention.
In a statement addressed to the church, he questioned its silence despite claims that Matembe is a committed member.
“I am reliably informed that Miria Matembe is a member of your Church who never misses any of your services or activities, but when you were reached out to hold prayers for her, you claimed it was a sensitive matter that you couldn’t engage in,” he said.
He also questioned what he described as a shift in the church’s response after her release.
“Now that she’s been released, you’re already at her home, expecting her family members to organize tea for you. Please take your hypocrisy away from her home,” he added.
The activist further alleged that the church’s earlier silence reflected a lack of support during her detention, adding, “Your silence meant you’re accomplices of her tormentor.”
